Ignore gates and channels at first. Strategy plus authority is the whole experiment — here's how to actually run it for 30 days.
Inner authority in Human Design is your body's reliable, non-mental intelligence for making correct personal decisions. There are seven types of inner authority — Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego/Heart, Self-Projected, Mental/Environmental, and Lunar — each determined by which energy centers are defined in your Bodygraph. Your authority bypasses the mind and uses your body's wisdom to guide you toward choices that are truly aligned with who you are.
If you only learn two things about Human Design, make them strategy and authority. These are the foundational mechanics that determine how you're designed to engage with life (strategy) and make decisions (authority). Everything else — gates, channels, profiles, incarnation crosses — becomes meaningful only when you're following your strategy and authority correctly.
Your strategy is determined by your Human Design type. It describes the correct way for you to engage with opportunities, relationships, and decisions in life. Think of it as your energetic operating system.
While strategy tells you how to engage with life, authority tells you how to make decisions. Your authority is your body's intelligence — a reliable, non-mental way to determine what's correct for you.
The critical insight: your mind is not your authority. The mind is designed for outer authority — processing, analyzing, and sharing ideas. But for personal decisions, your body's intelligence is far more reliable.
How it works: You experience emotional waves — cycles of hope and pain, enthusiasm and melancholy. No decision is ever perfectly clear in the moment because you're always somewhere on the wave.
Approximately 50% of humanity has this authority.
Practice: When facing a decision, ask yourself at three different emotional states. If the answer is consistently yes (or no) across the wave, you have your clarity.
How it works: Your sacral center responds in the moment with gut-level sounds and sensations. It's binary — yes or no, on or off.
Practice: Have someone ask you a series of simple yes/no questions. Notice how your body responds before your mind kicks in.
How it works: Your spleen communicates through spontaneous, in-the-moment intuitive knowing. It's quiet, fast, and doesn't repeat.
Practice: Start noticing subtle physical sensations throughout the day. Which moments carry a clear "yes/safe" or "no/not safe" feeling?
How it works: Your willpower and heart center guide decisions. You know what you truly have the will and desire for.
Practice: Before commitments, check: "Am I saying yes because I truly want this, or because I think I should?"
How it works: You discover your truth through self-expression — speaking your direction and identity out loud.
Practice: Use a trusted friend as a sounding board. Ask them to listen without advising. Notice what you say and how it feels.
How it works: You don't have an internal authority below the throat. Instead, you process decisions through conversation and environment.
Practice: When facing a decision, discuss it in different physical spaces with different people. Notice where and with whom clarity arises.
How it works: The Moon's 28-day cycle through all 64 gates is your authority. Each day brings a different perspective.
Practice: Keep a lunar journal. Track decisions over multiple cycles to learn your personal patterns.
The biggest challenge is moving from mental decision-making to body-based authority. Your mind will resist:
These are all mind arguments. Your authority doesn't care about logic — it cares about what's correct for you.
1. Week 1: Notice how you currently make decisions. Are they mental or body-based? 2. Week 2: Practice your authority with small, low-stakes decisions 3. Week 3: Start applying strategy — notice when you initiate vs. respond 4. Month 2: Apply authority to medium-stakes decisions 5. Month 3+: Begin trusting authority for bigger life decisions
Every other element of your chart — your gates, channels, profile, incarnation cross — only expresses correctly when you're following your strategy and authority. It's like a navigation system:
Without the first two, you can know everything about your chart and still live your not-self. With them, even basic chart knowledge transforms your life.
Start here. Experiment for 3-6 months. Notice what changes. That's the Human Design experiment.
