Emotional Authority: Riding the Wave to Clarity

There is no truth in the now for emotional people. How to ride your wave, time big decisions, and stop regretting your fast yeses.

If you have Emotional Authority, you're designed to make decisions over time. There is no truth in the now for you—your clarity comes through riding your emotional wave.

Understanding Your Wave

The Decision-Making Process

1. Never make major decisions in emotional highs or lows 2. Sleep on it—often multiple times 3. Check in at different points on your wave 4. Look for a sense of clarity that persists across emotional states

Tips for Success

The emotional wave is a chemical rise and fall in the Solar Plexus, and it runs whether or not anything is happening in your life. At the top you feel optimistic and expansive; at the bottom you feel flat and pessimistic. Neither point tells the truth. Clarity — not certainty, clarity — comes from having felt the decision at several points across the wave.

There are three wave types: the Individual wave, which builds silently and then releases sharply; the Tribal wave, which spikes around need and touch; and the Collective wave, which rolls in gradual hope and pain. Learning which one you have prevents you from pathologising your own chemistry.

How Long to Wait

There is no fixed rule, only a practical one: wait until the decision stops feeling different depending on the day. Small decisions may take an hour. Job offers, moves, and relationships often take days or weeks.

1. Sleep on it at minimum. Never decide anything significant in the first hour. 2. Revisit the decision at a high point and a low point. 3. Notice whether the answer stays the same or changes with your mood. 4. When the pull is steady across the wave, act.

Buying Yourself Time

Most people with emotional authority do not need better decisions; they need better sentences. Practise these:

Anyone who will not give you a night is telling you something useful about the opportunity.

Spontaneity and the Wave

Emotional authority means there is no truth in the now — which is not the same as no fun in the now. Spontaneity in small things is fine and often necessary. The wave applies to commitments: things with consequences you will still be carrying next month.

When You Get It Wrong

You will decide from a peak sometimes. When you do, note what the peak felt like so you can recognise it next time. Emotional authority is learned by contrast, not by theory.
