The Four Types of Definition in Human Design (and No Definition)

Single, Split, Triple Split, Quadruple Split — your definition explains who you feel completed by. Find yours and what it changes about relationships.

Definition is the forgotten layer

Most people learn their Type and Authority and stop. Definition — how the defined centers in your chart are grouped — is the layer that explains why two people with identical Type and Authority can process at completely different speeds.

There are five configurations: Single, Split, Triple Split, Quadruple Split, and No Definition.

Single Definition (about 41%)

All defined centers connect in one unbroken circuit. Energy moves through your whole definition without a gap.

Split Definition (about 46%)

Two separate groups of defined centers, no channel between them.

Triple Split Definition (about 11%)

Three separate areas of definition.

Quadruple Split Definition (about 1%)

Four separate areas — rare, and only possible in charts with a lot of defined centers.

No Definition (Reflectors only)

No centers defined, therefore no definition at all. This is exclusively the Reflector configuration, roughly 1% of people.

What definition changes in practice

Decision timing. More splits means more time. This is the most actionable takeaway in the whole topic. If you have Emotional Authority and a Triple Split, you are not slow — you are running two slow processes at once, and forcing speed reliably produces regret.

Relationship dynamics. Definition explains the mechanical part of chemistry. Someone whose definition bridges your split changes how you think and feel while they are present. That is neither love nor manipulation; it is wiring. Knowing it prevents a specific kind of heartbreak.

Working conditions. Single Definition people can work in isolation indefinitely. Triple Splits usually cannot. Reflectors are entirely dependent on the health of the room. Matching your work setup to your definition removes friction that no productivity system can touch.

How to find yours

Definition is listed directly on most chart readouts, usually near Type and Authority. If it is not, look at your defined channels and trace whether every defined center connects to every other one through a channel. Count the separate groups.

Then apply the one rule that covers all of it: the more separate groups you have, the more time and the more varied company your process needs.
