The origins of Human Design

Human Design was received by Alan Robert Krakower, who took the name Ra Uru Hu, over eight days and nights on the island of Ibiza in January 1987. He described the experience as an encounter with a 'Voice' that transmitted the mechanics of the system in extraordinary detail. Whatever one makes of that account, what came out of it was a coherent, internally consistent synthesis that had not existed before.

Ra spent the following two decades teaching the system, first in Europe and then internationally, and founded the International Human Design School to standardise the training. He died in 2011. The body of work he left behind — the Rave I Ching, the type and authority mechanics, Variable, PHS, and the Global Incarnation Index — remains the reference material for professional analysts.

The four traditions Human Design synthesises

• The I Ching: the 64 hexagrams map directly onto the 64 gates of the bodygraph.
• Western astrology: planetary positions at birth, and at the 88-degree solar arc before birth, determine gate activations.
• The Hindu-Brahmin chakra system: the traditional seven chakras were reconfigured into the nine centers.
• The Kabbalistic Tree of Life: the channel structure between centers echoes the Tree's paths.
• Modern physics: Ra framed the neutrino field as the carrier of information that imprints a chart at birth.

The 1781 mutation and the nine-centered being

Human Design holds that humanity shifted from a seven-centered to a nine-centered form around 1781, coinciding with the discovery of Uranus. The claim is not that biology changed overnight but that the way awareness operates in the body reorganised. Practically, it means the old spiritual instruction to seek unity and follow the mind no longer matches how modern humans are built — hence the emphasis on strategy and authority rather than willpower and belief.

How Human Design spread

For years the system remained relatively niche, taught through the IHDS and a handful of national schools. From roughly 2018 onward it grew rapidly online, carried by teachers who translated the mechanics into accessible language for people who would never sit a professional analyst course. That growth brought simplification and, sometimes, distortion — which is why returning to the mechanics matters.

How to treat the story

You do not have to accept the transmission account to use the system. Treat Human Design as an experiment rather than a belief: run your strategy and authority for a lunar cycle or two and judge it by what happens to your energy, your sleep, and the quality of your decisions.
