What are the 64 gates in Human Design?
The 64 gates correspond to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and sit on the nine centers of the bodygraph. Each gate is a specific, narrow theme — a particular flavour of awareness, energy, or expression. The planets in your chart activate gates at the moment of your birth and again 88 days before it, and those activations are what build your channels, define your centers, and ultimately produce your type and authority.
Gates are the vocabulary of Human Design. You do not need them to run your experiment, but they are where the system gets specific: they explain the particular way your Throat expresses, or the exact fear your Spleen carries.
How to work with your gates
- Start with the gates in your defined channels — those are your consistent themes.
- Hanging gates (one side of a channel only) show what you look for in other people.
- Gates in undefined centers are conditional; they switch on when someone else completes the channel.
- Each gate has a gift expression and a shadow expression; both are yours.
- Transits activate gates temporarily, which is why some weeks feel unusually creative, pressured, or social.
