PHS & Your Diet: How Human Design Reveals Your Ideal Way of Eating
Your Primary Health System (PHS) determination reveals not just what to eat, but how, when, and where to eat for optimal digestion and vitality.
Most nutrition advice treats everyone the same. Eat whole foods, drink water, avoid processed sugar. While that baseline is helpful, Human Design's Primary Health System (PHS) goes deeper — revealing your unique relationship with food based on your bodygraph.
What is PHS?
The Primary Health System is part of the advanced Human Design framework that addresses how your body is designed to take in nourishment. It's derived from the arrows at the top of your bodygraph — specifically the bottom-left arrow, which relates to your Determination.
Your Determination tells you the optimal *conditions* under which your body digests and absorbs nutrients most efficiently. It's less about specific foods and more about the environment and manner of eating.
The Six Determinations
1. Appetite (Smell)
You're designed to let your nose guide your eating. If food smells appealing, your body is ready for it. If the smell is off or uninteresting, skip it — even if it's "healthy."
- Cook at home more so you can smell food as it's prepared
- Smell your food before eating — let the aroma prime your digestion
- Avoid eating food that doesn't smell appealing to you
2. Taste
Your tongue is your guide. You need to taste food to know if it's right for you. This means sampling, experimenting, and paying close attention to how flavors feel in your mouth.
- Eat slowly and savor each bite
- Experiment with diverse cuisines and flavors
- If something tastes "off," trust that signal even if the food is fresh
3. Outer Vision (Light)
You're designed to eat in well-lit environments. Natural daylight is ideal. The visual presentation of food matters to your digestion.
- Eat your main meals during daylight hours
- Make food visually appealing — plate presentation matters
- Avoid eating in dark restaurants or dimly lit rooms when possible
4. Inner Vision (Dark)
The opposite of Outer Vision — you digest best in dimmer, more intimate settings. Candlelight dinners aren't just romantic for you; they're digestive medicine.
- Eat in softly lit or calm environments
- Avoid harsh fluorescent lighting during meals
- Evening meals may feel more nourishing than bright morning breakfasts
5. Feeling (Calm)
You need emotional and environmental calm to digest properly. Stress, arguments, or chaotic energy during meals disrupts your system.
- Eat alone or with people who bring peace
- No screens, news, or stressful conversations during meals
- Create a ritual around mealtimes — even just three deep breaths before eating
6. Touch (Nervous)
You thrive with a bit of stimulation while eating. Background music, conversation, or even eating on the go can actually *support* your digestion rather than hinder it.
- Eat in social settings or with background activity
- Moving while eating (walking lunch) might actually help you
- Don't force yourself into silent, meditative meals if they feel wrong
How to Experiment
The key with PHS is experimentation, not dogma. Try eating according to your determination for 2-4 weeks and notice:
- Digestion quality: Less bloating, more energy after meals?
- Appetite patterns: Are you naturally hungrier at certain times?
- Overall vitality: Do you feel more nourished and satisfied?
PHS and the Broader Picture
PHS is just one layer of the advanced Human Design system. Combined with your [Type](/types), [Authority](/what-is-human-design), and Environment, it creates a holistic picture of how you're designed to move through the world.
Remember: this isn't about perfection. It's about noticing what works for YOUR body and giving yourself permission to eat differently than the people around you.
