Determination — the digestion arrow in your Variable — is about how you eat rather than what you eat. Here is the practical version and how to test it safely.
The top-left arrow of your Human Design chart describes Determination, also called Digestion or the Primary Health System (PHS). It is the closest thing Human Design has to a nutrition model, and it is worth being precise about what it claims.
It does not tell you which foods are good for you. It describes the *conditions* under which your body assimilates food well: the timing, the temperature, the sequence, the amount of sensory input around the meal.
That reframing is the whole value. Most people have tried changing what they eat. Very few have systematically changed how they eat.
Across the different determinations, the variables that show up repeatedly are:
One thing at a time versus mixed. Some bodies do far better with simple, unmixed meals — one food, then another — than with complex plates where everything is combined.
Hot versus cold. Some bodies want food warm and cooked; others assimilate cool or raw food easily. This is one of the easiest to test.
High sensory input versus low. Some determinations depend heavily on smell, sound, and appearance of the food, and eat badly when distracted. Others are relatively insensitive to the setting.
Timing and rhythm. Whether you do well with regular meals at consistent times, or with eating when genuinely hungry and skipping when not.
Alone versus with others. For many determinations, eating in company — with talking, screens, or noise — measurably degrades digestion. This is probably the single most common practical finding.
If you take one thing from PHS, take this: most people digest better when they are not distracted while eating. No phone, no laptop, no meeting, no scrolling. Just the food.
It sounds like generic wellness advice, and it is also what the Design side of the chart keeps pointing at. Many people who test this get results within a week — steadier energy after meals, less bloating, less afternoon crash.
1. Do Strategy and Authority first. Determination is a refinement, not a starting point. If you are making all your food choices against your Authority, adjusting the temperature of your lunch will not save you. 2. Change one condition at a time. Not the food. The condition. Eat alone for two weeks. Or eat cooked instead of raw. Or eat one food at a time. 3. Measure energy two hours later. That is the signal. Not how the meal tasted, not how virtuous you felt — how your body is doing 120 minutes afterwards. 4. Give each test at least two to four weeks. Digestion changes are slow and easily confounded by sleep, stress, and travel. 5. Keep a very short log. Date, condition changed, energy at +2 hours, sleep that night. Three lines a day.
Human Design's most defensible claim here is about children. A child's determination is set by their design, not by household habit, and forcing a child to eat in a way their body does not assimilate well produces years of low-grade digestive trouble. Letting a child eat one food at a time, or in silence, or at unusual hours, is often all that is needed.
If you are looking at this for a child, keep it observational rather than restrictive.
Human Design is not medicine. Determination does not diagnose, treat, or replace anything. If you have digestive symptoms, food intolerances, an eating disorder history, or you are managing a medical condition, work with a doctor or registered dietitian — and treat PHS as, at most, a set of conditions to discuss with them rather than a protocol to follow alone.
Nothing in this layer requires eliminating food groups, fasting, or restricting intake. If a Human Design interpretation is pushing you toward restriction, that is a red flag about the interpreter, not a feature of the system.
Determination is the most body-level part of Human Design and one of the most testable. Change the conditions around your meals, not the moral content of your plate, and watch what your energy does two hours later. That is the entire experiment.
