Human Design Circuitry: Individual, Tribal and Collective Explained

Individual, Tribal, Collective — circuitry explains why you mutate, protect, or share. The clearest breakdown of the three circuit groups and your role.

Three ways energy moves

Every one of the 36 channels in a Human Design chart belongs to a circuit, and every circuit belongs to one of three circuit groups: Individual, Tribal, or Collective. Circuitry is the layer that explains *what your definition is for* — who it serves and how it is meant to move through the world.

Two people with the same Type and Authority can live very differently depending on whether their definition is mostly individual, mostly tribal, or mostly collective.

Individual circuitry: mutation

Keynote: empowerment through mutation.

Individual channels carry the pulse of the new. They do not run on logic or on need — they run on a pulse that switches on and off with no regard for schedules. Individual energy is melancholic, creative, and inherently disruptive.

What it looks like in a life:

Individual circuitry serves the collective by mutating it. That only works if the person actually expresses the mutation rather than sanding it down to fit.

Sub-circuits: the Knowing circuit (inspiration and knowing), the Centering circuit (the 34-57 and 10-34, the integration channels), and the Individual Knowing stream.

Tribal circuitry: support

Keynote: support through bargain.

Tribal channels are about the family, the community, and the material terms of survival: food, money, sex, care, resources, contracts. Tribal energy runs on touch and bargain — you give something, you get something, and the deal is explicit.

What it looks like in a life:

Tribal circuitry is the most physically intimate of the three. Touch matters. Being present matters. Abstract, remote relationships do not satisfy it.

Sub-circuits: the Defense circuit and the Ego circuit.

Collective circuitry: sharing

Keynote: sharing.

Collective channels take experience and turn it into something transmissible to everyone. Collective energy is not personal — it is designed to be given away.

It has two streams:

Logic (understanding). Pattern, repetition, testing, refinement. Logical collective energy is about what will work in the future because it has been proven to work over and over. These people need to be doubted and tested; scepticism sharpens them.

Abstract (sensing). Experience, story, and reflection on the past. Abstract collective energy gathers experiences, then makes sense of them backwards, in narrative. These people teach through story and need cycles of experience before wisdom arrives.

What collective circuitry looks like in a life:

Reading your own mix

Look at your defined channels and sort them into the three groups. Most people are weighted toward one or two.

Why circuitry is useful

It answers the question Type and Authority cannot: *what is this energy actually for?* A Generator with heavy Individual circuitry and a Generator with heavy Tribal circuitry both respond, but one is here to mutate a field and the other is here to hold a family together. Same Strategy, entirely different life.

Circuitry also depersonalises a lot of friction. Individual people are not being difficult on purpose, tribal people are not being clannish for fun, and collective people are not oversharing — each is running the circuitry they were built with.
